What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up?

It seems like the most common question I have ever been asked ever since I was a little kid is: “what do you want to be when you grow up?” And if you are a millennial you can probably agree with that statement.

And if you are a millennial that answer has probably changed every two weeks since your mom said you could be anything you wanted to be. I wanted to be a wizard, and a pirate, and then I wanted to be a journalist, a documentarian, a vet, a journalist, a cook, an archaeologist, a pirate, a filmmaker, and then a journalist, and honestly now I just want to be a pirate.

In this world you have two options, you can make it as a simple homemaker, keep a steady job, marry your favorite person, and have lots of babies… or you can do none of that and have an amazing career with lots of travel and amazing adventures.

And if you’re not doing either of those then guess what…. You are a FAILING MILLENNIAL.

I live with my mother, don’t make a living wage, have more debt than I make in a year, and I’m starting to see that none of that is any reason to be unhappy. Yeah sure, my mom still makes me dinner every night and buys me groceries… but what part of that is failing while I’m still this young?

I feel like we (me especially) get caught up in this idea of what our perfect life is supposed to be like that we forget how perfect life can be even when it’s so freaking messy.

There are a lot of unknowns out there and I’m starting to learn how to navigate them, maybe there is still time to be a pirate in my life, and maybe it’s time we started embracing the fact that most of us millennials are going to be stuck in this rut until we learn exactly what way the ship actually faces.

It’s time to embrace the messy, boring, time consuming thing we call life. And see what comes of it.
